How to achieve your best doctoring

Each patient is unique, but much of what we do is not.

We’re systematic. We follow the same steps, the same procedures over and over. Consistency helps us be “complete.” It helps us avoid overlooking something important in patient care. It helps regularize the expected clinical outcome.

But being systematic and consistent also means being repetitive. And repetition begets drudgery and boredom.

  1. We may be systematic but that doesn’t mean our system resembles everyone else’s.

We vary from one another. We all have our own preferences, each influenced by his or her particular education, experiences and intuition.

Here’s the good news: despite the variety in our systems, our various systems all promote predictable patient-care outcomes based on our individual preferences.

Here’s what Dental Symphony does: it identifies and automates a dentist’s pattern of preferences, automates the repetitive steps, and speeds up the actual diagnosis for care and case management, thus freeing up the dentist for other pursuits.

In Dental Symphony, the selection of your own preferences makes it easy for you to create treatment plans you’ll like with unbelievable ease and speed. And to do so automatically—but without locking you into choices inflexibly.

Every aspect of a treatment plan created in Dental Symphony is easily modified by you at any point -- giving you power, flexibility and control.

Here’s how it works: when you set up Dental Symphony the first time, you choose your base preferences for the following:

  1. Tooth numbering system
  2. Restorations of lesions
  3. ADA codes and fees in treatment planning
  4. Teeth examination parameters and sequence
  5. Peridontal examination parameters and sequence
  6. Forms for noting clinical findings
  7. Printing
  8. Correspondence templates
  9. Prescriptions format

You can change your preferences at will. Dental Symphony comes with a set of preferences “out of the box” that may satisfy you—but change your preferences as much as you want.

Let Dental Symphony do the heavy lifting for you and your staff.

And then spend more time in direct patient care.

Very.

Storage

When you use Dental Symphony, your computer connects to any one of several commercial-grade servers we maintain in a secure, disaster-proof configuration. Information is backed up continuously and archived indefinitely.

Dental Symphony greatly reduces your office’s IT infrastructure needs, allowing you to focus on your patients, not on technology.

Data transmission

When data is transmitted back and forth from your office to our server, it is encrypted with 128-bit encryption, the same level of encryption required by banking and financial institutions for the transmission of sensitive financial information over the Internet. Encrypted data is unreadable except with the encryption key in our servers and the encryption key “lent” to you and your staff (and incorporated invisibly into the Dental Symphony portal on your computer).

Thawte® Secured

For data transmission of office and patient information, Thawte provides Dental Symphony 128-bit encryption. Thawte (owned by VeriSign) is a leading world provider of data-transmission security. Your office and patient data is subject to the same minimum level of encryption required of banks and financial institutions.

Advantages to you

  1. Your patient records are safer and more secure in Dental Symphony than they are sitting in manila folders on a shelf in your office. They won’t get lost, stolen, or burned in a fire.
  2. Improper access to your patient records is much more difficult.

Yes, and we are Thawte® Secured.

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is federal legislation that requires virtually all health-care providers (such as dentists) to ensure certain standards of privacy for patients and their records.

As required by HIPAA regulations, Dental Symphony contracts with subscribers through its “Terms of Use” to provide all patient records created, transmitted and stored by Dental Symphony the levels of security and protection required. (Also see the topic, “How secure are my records?”)

A copy of the HIPAA Business Associate Agreement between a subscriber and Dental Symphony is made a part of the Terms of Use. You are invited to review it in detail prior to subscribing and to print it at any time.

In addition, Dental Symphony requires unique user identifiers for all office staff and simplifies fast and effective tracking of all clinical activities.

There are so many reasons. . . .

Dental Symphony is a complex, interactive application that is nimble, flexible, and dynamic because it is Internet-based. Upgrades and improvements are made easily and seamlessly.

The WAN model (wide-area network, hosted internally on a local server in an office) is severely limited relative to the capabilities of an Internet-based application. While a WAN was the best framework available at one time, a self-contained office network requires substantial maintenance and is relatively difficult and time-consuming to update. “Backup and restore” functions are critical, time-consuming, and cumbersome. None of these is an issue with Dental Symphony.

Dental Symphony requires only a dependable, high-speed Internet connection to be available. And the Internet itself has never “gone down.” Even if you lose your high-speed connection, Dental Symphony is still functional by dial-up (although the application will appear to function slowly due to the relatively slow data-transmission speed of dial-up connections).

Dental Symphony provides built-in security, backup services, and availability that it could not do if it were not Internet-based. Its hosted redundant servers means that

  1. no hardware crash will erase your data
  2. the application is available to you 24/7 wherever you’ve got an Internet-connection

Dental Symphony reduces your need for capital investment in hardware, network maintenance, and extensive support.

A Truly Mobile, Safely-Secured Internet-Based System

To realize the productivity promises of an EMR or EHR (electronic medical record or electronic health record), the system must be accessible anywhere, anytime. Dental Symphony hosts the application, and all you need to access the system is a computer with Internet connectivity.

Dental Symphony and your data are housed in a secure, fully redundant hardware configuration served from a disaster-proof facility. Dental Symphony actually resides on our servers in a protected environment rather than on hardware in your office. All patient data is stored at a secure, disaster-proof facility.

Our server infrastructure is fully redundant, backed by multiple Internet and VPN connections, emergency diesel power, and 24/7 monitoring by network and systems engineers. Data is backed up continuously throughout the day and archived indefinitely in a secure location.

A Word about HIPAA

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is federal legislation that requires virtually all health-care providers (such as dentists) to ensure certain standards of privacy for patients and their records.

As required by HIPAA regulations, Dental Symphony contracts with all subscribers through its “Terms of Use” to provide them the levels of security and protection required for all patient records created, transmitted and stored by Dental Symphony. (Also see the topic, “How secure are my records?”)

Each stands on its own.

Dental Symphony is a clinical dental system. You might think of it as a patient-management application.

While computerized practice-management systems may generate a kind of patient record for you, their primary features are billing, calendaring, and insurance. Their patient records tend to emphasize those features.

Dental Symphony is a patient-care/patient-treatment system. Regardless of your choice of practice management system, Dental Symphony will become your tool of choice for treatment planning, patient education, charting, emergency response, and overall patient management.

You’ll want to use your practice-management system for billing, calendaring, and insurance. But we think you’ll soon prefer Dental Symphony’s patient record for the strong clinical features that make it something truly special.

How can Dental symphony help me?

Not everyone is ready to "go paperless."

We kept that in mind in creating Dental Symphony.

If you're not ready to give up paper records, all key features are still available to you. And Dental Symphony will make your paper records better.

  1. Dental Symphony documents are formatted for paper printing.
  2. All information Dental Symphony places in an electronic patient record is easily printed and added to your existing paper files.
  3. Dental Symphony will organize your patient record and integrate information into an ideal format you may have always wanted but lacked staff or time to maintain, making maintenance of your paper records easier.
  4. Never again “lose” your patient records. You’ll always have an electronic patient record to provide you a secure back-up copy of everything you do in Dental Symphony.

You give up no Dental Symphony functionality by choosing to print paper copies of your records.

If you ARE ready to “go paperless”. . .

Dental Symphony makes it easy to transition.

Sure–if that’s your goal.

Or it will shorten your work day, give you more quality time with each of your patients, or all of that. It's your choice.

Dental Symphony reduces the amount of pre-treatment prep time required, makes diagnosis easier and faster, and generates treatment plans for you automatically. The duplicative, repetitive steps you may not be aware of are minimized or eliminated altogether.

But every step will save you time, starting with the ability of patients to enter their dental and medical history from home-directly into your system. Or start with staff taking all histories: it's fast, easy, and thorough. Even better, staff can use Dental Symphony's fast and easy charting system to record existing findings before your exam begins. All you do is confirm findings and approve or change the recommended treatment plan preconfigued to your preferences.

That's not all. Save research time, too. Find immediate answers to questions about disease implications, new techniques, and drug and medical interactions via the Dental Symphony Library, forums, and links to articles.

We promise you: it will.

It saves you time, starting with giving patients the ability to enter their dental and medical history from home--directly into your system via the Internet; with rapid and thorough teeth and perio charting; with staff-administered medical and dental questionnaires that are fast and thorough and prompt for important follow-up; and more.

Whenever you’re ready, Dental Symphony will transition your practice from paper-based to paperless without skipping a beat.

Practice management applications make you a better business person. Dental Symphony will make you a better doctor.

But don't take our word for it. Try it yourself.
